A few months back, I received the following email about payment to design the HVAC system for a new ENERGY STAR home. The author of the email is a home energy rater, and my client. The “HVAC guy” is the HVAC contractor who has hired the rater to get the HVAC Design completed for the job.

I've made my living solely as a home energy pro since 2004, and I was building a high performance home for two years before that. For six of the past eight years, I've been running my own business, and Energy Vanguard is halfway through its fourth year now. It doesn't take a PhD in physics to be...

Independent home energy auditors have always been a rare breed. In the past decade, though, an army of them has gone through RESNET or BPI training programs and hit the streets in search of homes to analyze. At first, these energy auditors were mainly of the RESNET variety—certified home energy (or...

Let's take a look at this saying that some people take as truth: Those who can, do, and those who can't, teach. You know it's a lie, right? Today is the last day of the HERS rater class I'm teaching in Toronto. To date, there's just been a handful of people pushing home energy ratings in Canada and sadly, they lost one of the most passionate advocates this year - Bruce Gough, whom I met at my first RESNET conference in 2004.

Energy Vanguard has been a Home Energy Rater Training Provider for one year now. We received our accreditation from RESNET in July 2010, and we just finished up our fourth class. As always right after a class, I'm both exhausted and exhilirated. I love teaching. I love homes. I love building...

I'm not on the board or staff of RESNET or the EPA's ENERGY STAR new homes program, so I'm not privy to the discussions they've been having. It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall at the meetings where those two groups discuss what's happening during the rollout of and transition to ENERGY...

I'm torn. Since I first dived into the ENERGY STAR Version 3 guidelines, the new HVAC requirements have pulled me in two directions. On the one hand, as someone who's been calling for change in the HVAC industry, I see them as a great way to move things forward. On the other hand, I'm a HERS rating...
