ENERGY STAR homes Version 3 teamwork
Posted by Allison Bailes on December 2, 2010
I've been involved with ENERGY STAR homes since 2004, when it was still in Version 1 of the program. It wasn't called that at the time, though. It was just ENERGY STAR. At that time, a home needed only one inspection, which occurred when the house was finished.

ENERGY STAR Version 3 new homes guidelines
Posted by Allison Bailes on November 23, 2010
Last week I got the new version of REM/Rate, the accredited home energy rating software that we use here at Energy Vanguard Energy Ratings, and it has the ENERGY STAR Version 2.5 and Version 3 requirements built in. I've checked a few files with it now, and it looks like the new requirements make a...

ENERGY STAR Version 3 session for HERS training providers, Day 2
Posted by Allison Bailes on November 11, 2010
As I mentioned in my review of the first day of this special ENERGY STAR Version 3 training, it wasn’t really a train-the-trainer session, and they admitted as much at the beginning of day 1. What it became instead was a vetting session for the new Version 3 guidelines. We spent almost the entire...

What does the future of HERS rater training and building science education hold?
Posted by Allison Bailes on October 5, 2010
I've been involved in the home energy rating field since 2003 and have witnessed a lot of growth. When I went through the HERS rater class, there were only a handful of HERS rater training providers and maybe a couple dozen HERS rating providers. Posted by Allison Bailes on September 1, 2010
I just read "How I (Almost) Saved the Earth" by Scott Adams, the cartoonist who created Dilbert, and, although it was funny, it was also a sad and telling account of the home energy rating industry. Adams recounted the frustration he experienced as he planned for and built a green home.

New training required for ENERGY STAR Partners who do home energy ratings.
Posted by Allison Bailes on August 12, 2010
The ENERGY STAR homes program has grown tremendously since it was introduced in the mid 1990s. In the initial program, version 1 of the guidelines, most homes were certified through a home energy rating and a single inspection that occurred when the house was finished. Version 2, introduced in 2006...

Mike Barcik, Southface Energy Institute director of technical services, Georgia energy code
Posted by Allison Bailes on August 2, 2010
Last night down at the Brick Store Pub, I ran into someone I know from the gym, and, as it turns out, he lives on Drexel Avenue. Naturally, I asked, 'Do you know Mike Barcik?' Of course, he did. Everyone, it seems, knows Mike. Some of you may know where I'm going with this. For those who don't, let...
