That term often has the word ‘ductless’ in front of it because most mini-splits have no ducts. There’s just the ‘head,’ which contains the evaporator coil and blower and is usually mounted on a wall (as shown at left). It’s a ‘mini-split’ because it’s a small split system heat pump.

You may also have heard the terms ‘inverter driven’ and ‘variable refrigerant flow’ and wondered what they mean and how they help. It’s possible you even know about the ducted version of mini-split heat pumps, which get around the objection that the heads are unattractive.

    Good to know others are educating folks on mini-split technology. It’s such a no-brainer in so many situations. One of the biggest questions that comes up for us in the Northwest Ductless Heat Pump Project (www.goingductless.com)and should probably come up more often is about sizing and design for optimal comfort and performance. I’m sure you plan to address this to some extent, given your history and pet peeves.
